    The Doubletree Irvine has special rates for the race, starting at below $100/nite. They are about 30 minutes from the start.

    I was wondering if there are any 100 mile runners that are staying in Santa Ana the night before the race. My family may be coming with me and I am trying to avoid having my wife and my two children get up early to drop me off if at all possible.

    In the race packet (dated 2011) it read that the 50 and 100 mile distance is mainly on "well- groomed" horse trails with numerous road crossings. I hope this helps.

    To confirm, the surface is on groomed horse trails. It is packed gravel and sand. Not as hard as asphalt or pavement. If it does rain, the trails do get a little muddy. Whatever the weather- it's a great run.

    Do we have a confirmed amount of ascent for the 100 miler? The Ultrasignup page says 14,000 feet, the 2011 race packet says 8,000, and the 2012 race packet says 12,000.

    Hi guys. Sorry for the confusion on the elevation, we have run a couple of different courses. The gain for the 100 is about 10,000 or a little less. For the 100, you do 6 full loops plus a final 10-mile to make the 100. Hope this helps!

    Jon - since Heed is our sponsor we will have that at all aid stations. Gels will be available at the start/finish and the turnaround. Usual fare at the other aid stations.

    We got a peek at the 10-day forecast, and its looking like thudershowers Friday and Saturday, but WARM, with high close to 80 and low 50. This is much warmer than normal! The course should be fine as the horse trails can soak up a lot of water before they become muddy. Keep your fingers crossed everyone!

    In the event of rain, will there be a sheltered (dry) area for the start/finish drop bags? I am flying in, so a tent is not an option, and I will not have a car to leave parked at the start. Thanks.

    Sterling - even if you don't find an official pacer, don't sweat it. Pretty large field this year and a pretty short loop = lots of opportunities to see people (even if they are a loop ahead or behind).

    What's your anticipated time?

    Is it possible to pick-up the bib as late as 7:30 Friday night? I can not make it to the pre-race meal and bib hand-out until 7:30 p.m. Also, interested in the Porta Potties question?

    Let's see if I can address everyone's questions. Food will be available for crew, but is primarily for the runners. There will be porta potties at the start/finish and at each aid station. There are also some bathrooms at the Sports Park, a couple of hundred yards from race HQ. The google map addres for the Coto Sports Park is 31141 Alta Drive, Coto de Caza. 5:30 a.m. check-in is for 100-mile runners only. 50-mile runners should wait until 6:15 to check in, and 1/2 and full marathoners can check in after 7:15. Barbara, send me a message through the website and we will work something out.

    Rob, another question: In the Race Packet it says "Drop bags must be left at the start finish by 5:30 a.m. on race day." Does that 5:30 a.m. requirement apply to the runners of the 50mi race too?

    Someone take the 50M course record. It should be quite doable. Very sadly, I have an out-of-town event that weekend that makes running the race this year just not possible. A great event for sure. I'll be watching online. Cheers!

    Greg - you can drop down from the 100 to the 50, but not the other way around.. so if you want that option you'll have to move up to the 100

    Greg - sign up for the 100. If you're not sure if you're ready, this is a great course to see exactly how much you do have in the tank. Most 100s, if you're in bad shape after 60 miles, you're out of luck - stuck having to wait at some remote aid station. Or, if you're not sure if you can make it to the next aid station, it might be prudent to be safe rather than sorry.

    Here, it's easier to push yourself because you're always only 2.5 miles from an aid station. Even if you don't think you can do another 50, maybe you can do another 2.5. Then...maybe another 2.5!

    That's what I did last year. Hadn't properly/fully trained for a 100, wasn't ready for it, but wanted to see if I could get past 50. Ended up doing 65 and feeling pretty damn proud!

    This year, of course, I'm getting my damn buckle.

    Brentano and Coto de Caza Dr. Aid one. Hawthorne and South Bend Aid 2. FVista del Verde and San Miguel Aid 3 and turnaround. They are very easy to get to.

    I would not recommend bikes on the course (space is needed for runners in both directions). The main road runs along 90% of the course, bike should stay on the street.
